Body Jewelry Guide

Ear Piercings

The most basic type of ear piercing is the one you probably got at Claire’s when you were ten–the lobe piercing! No body jewelry guide would be complete without this basic one! There are even some complications with this type of piercing too though, because lobe piercings can be central or in an “upper lobe” configuration more inward to the ear. As you probably already know, the earrings you can wear in your lobes run the gamut from simple studs to gauges that stretch your lobe wide open!

Above the lobe is the tragus, a piece of cartilage located where your ear meets your head. On the opposite side of the tragus is the anti-tragus, a piece of cartilage directly opposite your tragus on the outer side of the ear. These bits of cartilage are usually best suited to body piercings like studs, barbells, or horseshoe rings.

Finally, the top part of the ear is made up of the helix (the outermost lip of the ear) and the little folds inside and upward on the ear. The helix is a popular spot for hoop earrings, as is the forward helix (the part of your helix that is closest to the skull). You can also get an industrial bar from one side of your helix to the other!

The flat and rook both refer to the two topmost sections of the ear, while the daith and snug are two middle-upper sections. There’s an opportunity for both studs and hoops here since the folds provide perfect spots for those kinds of piercings to go through! These are unique ways to rock a body piercing since they draw attention to parts of the ear people don’t notice until it’s pierced!

Facial Piercings

From eyebrows to anti-eyebrows to chin piercings, there’s a lot of real estate on your face to pierce! To give you an idea, there are more than ten ways to pierce your lips alone. Lip piercings are a classic and sexy way to rock a body piercing since that area of the face is so perfect for flirtation already. With a lip piercing, every word is hotter!

First, let’s talk about the different types of “bites” you can get as a lip piercing. Yes, you heard right! Studs around your lips paired into groups or patterns are referred to as bites. There are angel bites, which is two labrets at the upper corners of your mouth, or dahlia bites, which line up with the corners exactly. There are even cyber bites, which are one in your nostrum and one just below your lower lip!

You can also get piercings in various areas of your cheeks, such as just below the eye, in the hollow of the cheek, or just about anywhere that provides the proper thickness of skin! A professional piercer can help you identify the best parts of your face to pierce, so don’t be afraid to ask tons of questions and get their opinion!

You might have come to this body jewelry guide to find out which of these facial piercings is best for a beginner. What we would recommend is to get one piercing at a time if you’re new to it, which means no shark bite configurations! A nostrum or lower lip piercing is a great way to start with lip piercings, and eyebrow piercings are a great starter piercing too!

Nose Piercings

You might have a specific nose piercing in mind, but there are so many types of nose piercing you could find one you like even better! Since nose piercings are many people’s first try at a more out-there body piercing, this is a good way to flex those creative muscles. You might not have guessed how many weird parts of your nose there are, but we’ll name them all for you here!

First, let’s start with your nostrils, the most obvious part of the nose. You can get your nose stud earrings placed on the main part of your nostril or a little higher up as a high nostril piercing. You can even get a bar right through the top part of both nostrils called a nasallang. A body piercing there looks tribal and experimental if that’s what you’re going for!

A septum piercing is a hoop that goes through the center of your nose, and did you know you can get a stud on that little divider line, called a septril? A stud a little higher up is called a rhino, and you can even get a bar across the very top of your nose’s center called an austin bar. These body piercings give you pretty hardcore vibes since it takes guts to get one!

Not only can you get a nose piercing around your nostril area, but you can also get a piercing in the bridge of your nose! There’s even a nose piercing right between your eyebrows called a third eye piercing that technically counts. Your sinuses are right in that area, making it part of your nose; who knew? This is probably the most scary-looking body piercing out there; you’ve got to be wild if you pierced your sinuses!

Nipple Piercings

One of the most provocative body piercings around, a nipple piercing is a jaw-dropper for sure. Unlike with the more complex parts of the body, a nipple piercing is usually the same procedure for everyone. The difference is in the type of jewelry you put in the piercing!

Barbells and hoops are the two most common pieces of body jewelry to put in a nipple piercing, and there is a world of possibility within those forms! People have created nipple piercings that including dangling decoration, and even twisting barbells that use the same piercing style as a typical bar but that innovate on that design in mind-bending ways!

And what does our body jewelry guide recommend as the best nipple piercing for a beginner? We would say you should get something that you know you can keep in for the time it takes a nipple piercing to heal. That’s a while–six months! –so don’t go for a dangly one right away.

Our body jewelry guide would say you should try a simple bar or horseshoe before you get fancy. Waiting might be annoying, but it’s way better than an infection or any other complications that could happen if you mess up your nipple piercing!

Belly Piercings

They were everywhere in the 2000s, and they’re making a comeback! As jeans go low-rise in the next few years, you’re going to want a way to flaunt that tummy. Belly piercings are on the come-up, so get in on the ground floor to be ahead of the curve! Whether you’re in love with crop tops or just want a body piercing to show off at the beach, a belly piercing is usually pretty simple and sweet.

Top mount belly rings give you a piercing above your navel and a charm that dangles. Conversely, a typical dangling belly button ring would have the piercing below your navel and the charm hanging down from there. Rings and barbells can also go in the navel at various points, such as top and bottom, and if you have an outie belly button, you’re in luck–one more place to pierce!

Belly piercings are a great starter piercing and might be one of the most recommended in this body jewelry guide for someone starting out. Nipple piercings are in a more sensitive area, and while earlobe piercings are a classic, they’re not exactly innovative. A belly piercing can strike a balance between eyebrow-raising and hair-raising when it comes to how brave you need to be to get it, and how confident you need to be to rock it.

Lavari's Body Jewelry Guide

Now that you’ve gotten a dizzying primer on the types of body piercing available to you, it’s time to choose for yourself. And the best part is that you don’t have to really choose–you can come back and get another once your newest has healed! Our body jewelry guide is always available to you for choosing your next one.

You might be wondering where to start if you’re a beginner. That means you’re exactly the person for who this body jewelry guide was written for! We’ve given a few recommendations already, but here are our thoughts all in one place.

First, you could pick a body part where you really want to get a body piercing and get something relatively simple there to start. So if you want to get a lip piercing, you don’t have to get a full set of four shark bite labrets–just get a Monroe and see where it goes! Like we said above, a basic lip piercing or belly piercing is a great way to start out since they’re pretty popular but won’t make you feel basic.
