Birthstones
She gave birth to you, but you’re just as grateful that she was brought into this world. What better way to tell her that than a birthstone pendant, ring or earrings set? The gemstone designated for her very own birth month will make her feel special and unique – which of course, she is!
Each month has a particular gemstone associated with it. These birthstones are believed to have their origin in the Bible and the 12 original birthstones correspond to the 12 tribes of Israel. In Exodus 28, the tribes are represented as 12 gemstones on a breastplate that Moses made for Aaron, the High Priest of the Hebrews.
Over the years, the stones eventually became associated with the 12 months of the year. Some of the gemstones have changed and others have been added to expand the list.
Not sure what her birthstone is? We’ve got you covered. Here is a quick and dirty reference for buying her birthstone jewelry.
January: Starting off the year is the garnet, which is typically dark red in color, though it can be found in a range of other colors. It also happens to be the state mineral of Connecticut and New York and Idaho’s state gemstone.
February: Amethyst, a purple variety of quartz, is the birthstone for February. This versatile gem has been used in jewelry since the times of Ancient Greece. Today, it is cherished as a stone that brings good luck and positivity.
March: Traditionally, aquamarine, a light blue semi-precious stone, represents March. The ancient Romans believed aquamarine was an energizing stone. Bloodstone, also known as heliotrope, is an alternative birthstone for March and is a variety of dark green jasper with red flecks.
April: Those born in the month of April are granted the privilege of calling the diamond their birthstone. Believed to have been first discovered in India, diamonds are now prized around the world for their beauty and sparkle. Diamonds are actually a solid form of carbon – much different than their original form!
May: The green gem emerald is for May babies and is reminiscent of the green growth of spring. One of the world’s largest emeralds is the Bahia emerald found in Brazil. It weighs 752 pounds (about 1,700,000 carats) and is valued at approximately $400 million.
June: Pearl is the most popular birthstone for June and is unique in that it is made within the shell of a clam instead of in the earth. They are typically round and smooth with a characteristic iridescent shine. If you’re looking for something different, alexandrite and moonstone are alternative birthstones for this month.
July: Hot like the summer sun, rubies represent July and are usually seen in red, though they come in pink varieties as well. The ruby is highly valued as a precious gemstone, especially in its deepest red colors – called blood-red or pigeon red. The Smithsonian National Museum of History hosts some of the world’s largest and most valuable rubies.
August: Another green birthstone is peridot, for those born in the month of August. It is usually founded in jewelry as olive to lime green gemstone. Interestingly, peridot crystals have been found on some meteorites that fell from the sky.
September: Sapphire’s reign over September birthdays and are a precious stone with regal significance. The 65th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II of England was celebrated with a sapphire jubilee in 2017 (other jubilee years are named for silver, gold, and diamond). This was a special case – typically, sapphire represents the 45th anniversary, so it’s great for a wedding anniversary gift, too.
October: Those born in October get opal as their birthstone, which is also the national gemstone of Australia. There are two types of opal: precious and common. The main difference is that precious opals have an iridescent sheen while common opals do not.
November: Orange topaz, also known as precious topaz, is November’s birthstone – kind of fitting due to the orange colors of fall and Thanksgiving. This stone is also a symbol of friendship. Topaz comes in a natural golden brown and is thus often confused for the similarly colored citrine (which is an alternative November birthstone.)
December: A relatively new addition to the birthstone list is tanzanite, a blue to violet stone named after Tanzania, the country where it was discovered. Other birthstones for December include turquoise and zircon.
There are several pieces in our collection that make lovely birthstone jewelry gifts but won’t break the bank. For instance, our opal dolphin pendant is perfect for Scorpio and Libra moms. All of our gemstones are conflict-free, so you can be sure you’re giving her a real birthstone without worrying about its source.
